PSDs

Photoshop documents, commonly known as PSDs, became the foundation for Molly Dickson’s exploration of abstract meaning through surreal imagery. Created as part of the visual identity for Henderson Avenue’s new mixed-use development, the works translate Dickson’s handmade cut-and-paste sensibility into a visual language for a neighborhood entering a new chapter.

The original commission was conceived as a set of design standards for the development’s campaign. It soon expanded into an opportunity for public art at the new property. The resulting fifteen works respond to the retail, restaurants, offices, and ground-level activity planned for Henderson Avenue, bringing a distinctly local perspective to a project centered on hospitality, connection, and the experience of place. Dickson’s work became central to that vision.

The Visual Language

Molly Dickson is an East Dallas native and Dallas-based artist. A fashion photographer, director, and motion artist who grew up in Lake Highlands, her selections for this project reflect Art on Henderson’s commitment to supporting Dallas artists, particularly those with a deep connection to the communities where their work is presented.

Dickson explores the space between the tactile and the technological, embracing and resisting emerging mediums in equal measure. Augmented reality exists alongside hands-on making, while color serves as one of her most distinctive tools. Used with both precision and exuberance, it creates images that are vivid, layered, and unmistakably her own.

She conjures small universes of fantastical landscapes inhabited by mysterious hands, eyes, and black-and-white silhouettes of eccentric and enigmatic figures traveling through her work.

Drawing from maximalism and the fragmented visual language of short attention spans, Dickson creates work that feels familiar yet heightened, playful yet carefully constructed. On Henderson Avenue, that visual language transforms the project’s commercial environment into something more unexpected: a portal into Dickson’s universe, where the character of a changing neighborhood becomes part of her ongoing visual conversation.

These fifteen works mark the evolution of a commission into a place-rooted public art project. They also mark a homecoming for an artist whose practice has grown far beyond Dallas, bringing her perspective back to the community that shaped her.

The works offer a glimpse into how Dickson’s visual language can move between the intimate and the expansive, the handmade and the digital, and the familiar and the surreal. They will be installed as public art on Henderson Avenue in 2027.
